Rev 17, “Babylon” Is Jerusalem

Rev 17:1 One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls then came and spoke to me, saying, Come with me! I will show you the doom (sentence, judgment) of the great harlot (idolatress) who is seated on many waters,

Rev 17:2  [She] with whom the rulers of the earth [the land] have joined in prostitution (idolatry) and with the wine of whose immorality (idolatry) the inhabitants of the earth [the land] have become intoxicated.

The Greek word “” (ghay) for the words “the earth” in Rev 17:2 is referring to “land”, it is not referring to the entire planet.

Rev 17:3  And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness; and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast, full of blasphemous names, having seven heads and ten horns

Rev 17:4  The woman was robed in purple and scarlet and bedecked with gold, precious stones, and pearls, [and she was] holding in her hand a golden cup full of the accursed offenses and the filth of her lewdness {and} vice.

Rev 17:5  And on her forehead there was inscribed a name of mystery [with a secret symbolic meaning]: Babylon the great, the mother of prostitutes (idolatresses) and of the filth {and} atrocities {and} abominations of the earth [the land].

The Greek word “” (ghay) for the words “the earth” in Rev 17:5 is referring to “land”, it is not referring to the entire planet.

Rev 17:6  I also saw that the woman was drunk, [drunk] with the blood of the saints (God’s people) and the blood of the martyrs [who witnessed] for Christ. And when I saw her, I was utterly amazed {and} wondered greatly.

Rev 17:7  But the angel said to me, Why do you wonder? I will explain to you the [secret symbolic meaning of the] mystery of the woman, as well as of the beast having the seven heads and ten horns that carries her.

Rev 17:8  The beast that you saw [once] was, but [now] is no more, and it is going to come up out of the Abyss (the bottomless pit) and proceed to go to perdition. And the inhabitants of the earth [the land] whose names have not been recorded in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world will be astonished when they look at the beast because it [once] was, but [now] is no more, and it is [yet] to come.

The English Bible says the beast is a “he”, but the Greek word for “beast” in Rev 17 is neuter gender, therefore the “beast” in Rev 17 is an “it”, not a “he.” The “beast” is the Roman Empire.

Rev 17:9 Here is the mind which has wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman [Jerusalem] sits,

The Greek word for “mountains” in Rev 17:9 means “mountain, hill”, so Rev 17:9 can also say, “the seven heads are seven hills” and that would be Rome.

Rev 17:10 and there are seven kings; five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; and when he comes, he must remain a little while.

Rev 17:10 talks about 7 Roman Caesars, 5 are no longer in power, one is in power, and one has not come into power, and when he comes into power, he will be in power for a little while.

Five have fallen, is a reference to the five Caesars who had died by this time, Julius Caesar, Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, and Claudius. One is, which is a reference to Nero, the current emperor at the time Revelation is written.

The seventh emperor we are told is a future one who will only lead for a little while. This is a reference to Galba who reigned for seven months during 68-69 CE. However, the eighth king in Rev 17:11 is a bit of a mystery because there are two men who led for a very short time (a few months), Otho and Vitellus. The eighth emperor is more than likely Vespasian who became emperor in 69 CE.

Vespasian was once the mightiest of the Roman generals, but was banished from Nero’s presence, during the time that John was writing, because he left several times during performances while Nero was singing or fell asleep if he remained. He was brought back to power to squelch the Jewish rebellions because of an old-established belief from the Orient that men from Judea would rule the world at this time (Suetonius: De Vita Caesarum–Divus Vespasianus, Section IV). A few short years later, Vespasian became emperor.

Therefore, since Rome had struggled through the reigns of Galba, Otho, and Vitellus, Vespasian’s reign represented a resurrection of the Roman Empire’s power. Vespasian defeated most of Judea and sent his son Titus to destroy Jerusalem.

Rev 17:11 The beast [the Roman Empire] which was and is not, is himself also an eighth and is {one} of the seven, and goes into destruction.

The beast is the Roman Empire lead by Caesar, therefore the beast and Caesar are one, the beast is an “it”, and Caesar is a “he”

Rev 17:12 The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but they receive authority as kings with the beast [the Roman Empire] for one hour.

Rev 17:13 These [the ten kings] have one purpose, and they give their power and authority to the beast [the Roman Empire]

Rev 17:14 These will wage war against the Lamb [Christ] and the Lamb will overcome them, because he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those who are with him {are the} called and chosen and faithful.

Rev 17:15 and he [the angel] said to me, the waters which you saw, where the whore [Jerusalem] sits, are peoples and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.

Rev 17:16 And the ten horns [the ten kings], which you saw upon the beast [the Roman Empire], these shall hate the whore [Jerusalem], and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.

The Greek text, “Textus Receptus” says, “And the ten horns, which you saw upon the beast, these shall hate the whore” and the Westcott & Hort Greek text says, “And the ten horns that you saw, and the beast, these shall hate the whore” in Rev 17:16 – the KJB (King James Bible) comes from the TR, all other English translations come from the W&H.

Since the TR was written before the W&H, I am using Rev 17:16 from the KJB.

That’s one example of how the 2 Greek New Testaments are not the same, and that shows that the Greek New Testament has been changed by man.

Rev 17:16 is talking about the destruction of Jerusalem, Jerusalem was destroyed in AD70, Revelation 17:16 proves Revelation was written before AD70.

Rev 17:17 For God has put in their hearts to fufill His will, and to agree, and give their kingdom to the beast [the Roman Empire], until the words of God shall be fulfilled.

The word “their” in Rev 17:17 is referring to the ten kings that give their power and authority to the beast (the Roman Empire) in Rev 17:13).

Rev 17:18 And the woman who you saw is the great city [Jerusalem], which reigns over the kings of the earth [the land].

The Greek word “” (ghay) for the words “the earth” in Rev 17:18 is referring to “land”, it is not referring to the entire planet.

“Babylon” in Rev 17 is Jerusalem, Jerusalem made an alliance with the beast (the Roman Empire), and then the 10 kings that gave their power and authority to the Roman Empire destroyed Jerusalem, that’s what Revelation 17 is about. Revelation is not about our time period.

Revelation talks about before the destruction of Jerusalem, Revelation talks about the destruction of Jerusalem, Revelation talks about the day of the Lord, the day of the Lord happened immediately after Jerusalem was destroyed, and Revelation talks about the new heavens and new earth that God created after the day of the Lord, the new heavens and new earth is spiritual, it is not a new planet, “new Jerusalem” in Rev 21 is the church, the church are the people who believe Yeshua is the Messiah that don’t practice sin.

“Babylon”, In Rev 18 Is Jerusalem

Rev 18:20 Rejoice over her, O heaven, and [you] saints, and apostles, and prophets; for God has judged her (Jerusalem) for how she treated you.

Rev 18:2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great [Jerusalem] is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils [demons], and the hold of every foul [unclean] spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.

The Greek word for “demons” in Rev 18:2 is neuter gender, that means that demons are not fallen angels. The Greek word for angel is masculine gender, if the Greek word for “demons” were masculine, then “demons would be fallen angels. The Bible does not support the teaching that says, “demons are fallen angels.”

The Greek word for “foul” in Revelation 18:2 is “akathartos”, “akathartos” means  “impure, unclean (tainted by sin)”, the word “akathartos” is neuter gender, an unclean spirit is a result of sin, an unclean spirit is not a fallen angel.

Rev 18:3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth [the land] have committed fornication with her [Jerusalem], and the merchants of the earth [the land] are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.

Some of Revelation is not written in chronological order, so it won’t make sense if one reads Revelation like one would read a book, for example Rev 17 talks about how the ten kings destroyed Jerusalem (Rev 17:16) , and then Rev 18:8 explains that the destruction of Jerusalem is God’s judgement, God used the Romans to destroy Jerusalem, and Rev 18 further describes God’s judgement on Jerusalem.

Rev 14:8 talks about the destruction of Jerusalem, so that shows the reader that some of Revelation is not written in chronological order, it is because some of Revelation is not written in chronological order that people get confused when they read Revelation.

There is only one “great city” also known as “Babylon” that is destroyed in Revelation and that city is Jerusalem. The destruction of Jerusalem happened, and then the day of the Lord happened, those 2 events are spoken about in some of the same chapters in Revelation.

When one understands that Revelation is about the destruction of Jerusalem, and that Revelation is about the day of the Lord, and that Revelation is about the new heavens and new earth that God created after the day of the Lord, then Revelation will make sense.

Rev 14:8 talks about the destruction of Jerusalem, so that shows the reader that some of Revelation is not written in chronological order, it is because some of Revelation is not written in chronological order that people get confused when they read Revelation.

There is only one “great city” also known as “Babylon” that is destroyed in Revelation and that city is Jerusalem. The destruction of Jerusalem happened, and then the day of the Lord happened, those 2 events are spoken about in some of the same chapters in Revelation.

When one understands that Revelation is about the destruction of Jerusalem, and that Revelation is about the day of the Lord, and that Revelation is about the new heavens and new earth that God created after the day of the Lord, then Revelation will make sense.

Rev 17:9 Here is the mind which has wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman [Jerusalem] sits,

The Greek word for “mountains” in Rev 17:9 means “mountain, hill”, so Rev 17:9 can also say, “the seven heads are seven hills” and that would be Rome.

Rev 17:10 and there are seven kings; five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; and when he comes, he must remain a little while.

Rev 17:10 talks about 7 Roman Caesars, 5 are no longer in power, one is in power, and one has not come into power, and when he comes into power, he will be in power for a little while.

Five have fallen, is a reference to the five Caesars who had died by this time, Julius Caesar, Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, and Claudius. One is, which is a reference to Nero, the current emperor at the time Revelation is written.

The seventh emperor we are told is a future one who will only lead for a little while. This is a reference to Galba who reigned for seven months during 68-69 CE. However, the eighth king in Rev 17:11 is a bit of a mystery because there are two men who led for a very short time (a few months), Otho and Vitellus. The eighth emperor is more than likely Vespasian who became emperor in 69 CE.

Vespasian was once the mightiest of the Roman generals, but was banished from Nero’s presence, during the time that John was writing, because he left several times during performances while Nero was singing or fell asleep if he remained. He was brought back to power to squelch the Jewish rebellions because of an old-established belief from the Orient that men from Judea would rule the world at this time (Suetonius: De Vita Caesarum–Divus Vespasianus, Section IV). A few short years later, Vespasian became emperor.

Therefore, since Rome had struggled through the reigns of Galba, Otho, and Vitellus, Vespasian’s reign represented a resurrection of the Roman Empire’s power. Vespasian defeated most of Judea and sent his son Titus to destroy Jerusalem.

Rev 17:11 The beast [the Roman Empire] which was and is not, is himself also an eighth and is {one} of the seven, and goes into destruction.

The beast is the Roman Empire lead by Caesar, therefore the beast and Caesar are one, the beast is an “it”, and Caesar is a “he”

Rev 17:12 The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but they receive authority as kings with the beast [the Roman Empire] for one hour.

Rev 17:13 These [the ten kings] have one purpose, and they give their power and authority to the beast [the Roman Empire]

Rev 17:14 These will wage war against the Lamb [Christ] and the Lamb will overcome them, because he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those who are with him {are the} called and chosen and faithful.

Rev 17:15 and he [the angel] said to me, the waters which you saw, where the whore [Jerusalem] sits, are peoples and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.

The Greek text, “Textus Receptus” says, “And the ten horns, which you saw upon the beast, these shall hate the whore” and the Westcott & Hort Greek text says, “And the ten horns that you saw, and the beast, these shall hate the whore” in Rev 17:16 – the KJB (King James Bible) comes from the TR, all other English translations come from the W&H.

Since the TR was written before the W&H, I am using Rev 17:16 from the KJB.

That’s one example of how the 2 Greek New Testaments are not the same, and that shows that the Greek New Testament has been changed by man.

Rev 18:16 And saying, Alas, alas that great city [Jerusalem], that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!

Rev 18:17 For in one hour has been made desolate such great wealth. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,

The word “hour” in Rev 18:17 does not necessarily mean that Jerusalem was destroyed in 60 minutes.

Rev 17:16 And the ten horns [the ten kings], which you saw upon the beast [the Roman Empire], these shall hate the whore [Jerusalem], and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.

Rev 18:17 confirms what Rev 17:16 says about Jerusalem being made “desolate”, Revelation 17:16 and Rev 18:17 are talking about the destruction of Jerusalem.

Rev 18:18 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city [Jerusalem]!

Rev 18:19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and mourning, saying, Alas, alas that great city [Jerusalem], wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour she has been made desolate.

Rev 17:16, Rev 18:17 and Rev 18:19 are talking about the destruction of Jerusalem.

Rev 18:23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in you; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in you: for your merchants were the great men of the earth [the land]; for by your sorceries [seductions and deceptions of idolatry] were all nations deceived.

Rev 18:24 And in her [Jerusalem] was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth [the land].

“Babylon” in Rev 18 is Jerusalem, Jerusalem made an alliance with the beast (the Roman Empire), and then the 10 kings that gave their power and authority to the Roman Empire in Rev 17:13, destroyed Jerusalem.

Some of Revelation is not written in chronological order, so it won’t make sense if one reads Revelation like one would read a book, for example Rev 17 talks about how the ten kings destroyed Jerusalem (Rev 17:16) , and then Rev 18:8 explains that the destruction of Jerusalem is God’s judgement, God used the Romans to destroy Jerusalem, and Rev 18 further describes God’s judgement on Jerusalem.

Rev 14:8 talks about the destruction of Jerusalem, so that shows the reader that some of Revelation is not written in chronological order, it is because some of Revelation is not written in chronological order that people get confused when they read Revelation.

There is only one “great city” also known as “Babylon” that is destroyed in Revelation and that city is Jerusalem. The destruction of Jerusalem happened, and then the day of the Lord happened, those 2 events are spoken about in some of the same chapters in Revelation.

When one understands that Revelation is about the destruction of Jerusalem, and that Revelation is about the day of the Lord, and that Revelation is about the new heavens and new earth that God created after the day of the Lord, then Revelation will make sense.

Revelation talks about before the destruction of Jerusalem, Revelation talks about the destruction of Jerusalem, Revelation talks about the day of the Lord, the day of the Lord happened immediately after Jerusalem was destroyed, and Revelation talks about the new heavens and new earth that God created after the day of the Lord.

The new heavens and new earth is spiritual, it is not a new planet, “new Jerusalem” in Rev 21 is the church, the church (new Jerusalem) are the people who believe Yeshua is the Messiah that don’t practice sin.

Babylon, In Rev 17 Is Jerusalem

Rev 17:1 One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls then came and spoke to me, saying, Come with me! I will show you the doom (sentence, judgment) of the great harlot (idolatress) who is seated on many waters,

Rev 17:2  [She] with whom the rulers of the earth [the land] have joined in prostitution (idolatry) and with the wine of whose immorality (idolatry) the inhabitants of the earth [the land] have become intoxicated.

Rev 17:5  And on her forehead there was inscribed a name of mystery [with a secret symbolic meaning]: Babylon the great, the mother of prostitutes (idolatresses) and of the filth {and} atrocities {and} abominations of the earth [the land].

The English Bible says the beast is a “he”, but the Greek word for “beast” in Rev 17 is neuter gender, therefore the “beast” in Rev 17 is an “it”, not a “he.” The “beast” is the Roman Empire.

Rev 17:9 Here is the mind which has wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman [Jerusalem] sits,

The Greek word for “mountains” in Rev 17:9 means “mountain, hill”, so Rev 17:9 can also say, “the seven heads are seven hills” and that would be Rome.

Rev 17:10 and there are seven kings; five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; and when he comes, he must remain a little while.

Rev 17:10 talks about 7 Roman Caesars, 5 are no longer in power, one is in power, and one has not come into power, and when he comes into power, he will be in power for a little while.

Five have fallen, is a reference to the five Caesars who had died by this time, Julius Caesar, Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, and Claudius. One is, which is a reference to Nero, the current emperor at the time Revelation is written.

The seventh emperor we are told is a future one who will only lead for a little while. This is a reference to Galba who reigned for seven months during 68-69 CE. However, the eighth king in Rev 17:11 is a bit of a mystery because there are two men who led for a very short time (a few months), Otho and Vitellus. The eighth emperor is more than likely Vespasian who became emperor in 69 CE.

Vespasian was once the mightiest of the Roman generals, but was banished from Nero’s presence, during the time that John was writing, because he left several times during performances while Nero was singing or fell asleep if he remained. He was brought back to power to squelch the Jewish rebellions because of an old established belief from the Orient that men from Judea would rule the world at this time (Suetonius: De Vita Caesarum–Divus Vespasianus, Section IV). A few short years later, Vespasian became emperor.

Therefore, since Rome had struggled through the reigns of Galba, Otho, and Vitellus, Vespasian’s reign represented a resurrection of the Roman Empire’s power. Vespasian defeated most of Judea and sent his son Titus to destroy Jerusalem.

Rev 17:11 The beast [the Roman Empire] which was and is not, is himself also an eighth and is {one} of the seven, and goes into destruction.

The beast is the Roman Empire lead by Caesar, therefore the beast and Caesar are one, the beast is an “it”, and Caesar is a “he”

Rev 17:12 The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but they receive authority as kings with the beast [the Roman Empire] for one hour.

Rev 17:13 These [the ten kings] have one purpose, and they give their power and authority to the beast [the Roman Empire]

Rev 17:14 These will wage war against the Lamb [Christ] and the Lamb will overcome them, because he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those who are with him {are the} called and chosen and faithful.

Rev 17:15 and he [the angel] said to me, the waters which you saw, where the whore [Jerusalem] sits, are peoples and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.

Rev 17:16 And the ten horns [the ten kings], which you saw upon the beast [the Roman Empire], these shall hate the whore [Jerusalem], and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.

The Greek text, “Textus Receptus” says, “And the ten horns, which you saw upon the beast, these shall hate the whore” and the Westcott & Hort Greek text says, “And the ten horns that you saw, and the beast, these shall hate the whore” in Rev 17:16 – the KJB (King James Bible) comes from the TR, all other English translations come from the W&H.

Since the TR was written before the W&H, I am using Rev 17:16 from the KJB.

That’s one example of how the 2 Greek New Testaments are not the same, and that shows that the Greek New Testament has been changed by man.

Rev 17:16 is talking about the destruction of Jerusalem, Jerusalem was destroyed in AD70, Revelation 17:16 proves Revelation was written before AD70.

Rev 17:17 For God has put in their hearts to fufill His will, and to agree, and give their kingdom to the beast [the Roman Empire], until the words of God shall be fulfilled.

The word “their” in Rev 17:17 is referring to the ten kings that give their power and authority to the beast (the Roman Empire) in Rev 17:13).

Rev 17:18 And the woman which you saw is the great city [Jerusalem], which reigns over the kings of the earth [the land].

The Greek word “” (ghay) for the words “the earth” in Rev 17:18 is referring to “land”, it is not referring to the entire planet.

“Babylon” in Rev 17 is Jerusalem, Jerusalem made an alliance with the beast (the Roman Empire), and then the 10 kings that gave their power and authority to the Roman Empire destroyed Jerusalem, that’s what Revelation 17 is about. Revelation is not about our time period.
