Revelation 20, “A Thousand Years” Isn’t A Literal 1000 Years

Before I talk about Rev 20, it’s important to understand who, or what the “dragon” is in Rev 20, and to do that we have to go back to Rev 12. Rev 12:3 shows that the “dragon” in Rev 20 is Rome, not a fallen angel.

Rev 12:3 And there appeared another wonder in [the] heaven [the sky]; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.

The Greek word “ourano” for “heaven” in Rev 12:3 is singular, that means that the word “heaven” in Rev 12:3 is not talking about the place where God dwells, instead it is talking about the “sky”, if the Greek word were plural then that would be talking about the place where God dwells.

Rev 12:3 is a description of Rome.

Rev 12:4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven [the sky], and did cast them to the earth [the land]:

The Greek word “ouranou” for “heaven” in Rev 12:4 is singular, that means that the word “heaven” in Rev 12:4 is not talking about the place where God dwells, instead it is talking about the “sky”, if the Greek word were plural then that would be talking about the place where God dwells.

The Greek word “” (ghay) for the words “the earth” in Rev 12:4 is referring to “land”, it is not referring to the entire planet.

Rev 12:7 And there was war in [the] heaven [the sky]: Michael and his angels  [messengers] fought against the dragon [Rome]; and the dragon [Rome] fought and his angels [messengers],

The Greek word “ourano” for “heaven” in Rev 12:7-8 is singular, that means that the word “heaven” in Rev 12:7-8 is not talking about the place where God dwells, instead it is talking about the “sky”, if the Greek word were plural then that would be talking about the place where God dwells.

Rev 12:8 and they were not strong enough, and there was no longer a place found for them in [the] heaven [the sky].

The dragon (Rome) was a deceiver, false accuser, and adversary of the church, that is why Rev 12:9 says the dragon is, “the ancient serpent, called the devil (false accuser), and satan (adversary)”.

The serpent in Genesis 3 deceived Eve, the dragon (Rome) was a deceiver like the serpent, the dragon wasn’t the serpent that deceived Eve.

Everything after Rev 4:1 is a prophetic word about the future during the time of the seven churches, therefore Rev 12 can’t be talking about anything that happened before the creation of man.

Rev 12 is talking about future events that would happen during the time that the seven churches were alive.

The Greek word “diabolos” for the word “devil” means “false accuser”, Rome was a false accuser of the church, that’s why the dragon is called the devil in Rev 12:9.

The Greek word “satanas” for the word “satan” means “adversary”, Rome was the adversary of the church, that’s why the dragon is called “satan” in Rev 12:9.

Anyone that is a deceiver is like the ancient serpent that deceived Eve, and anyone that is a false accuser, is a devil, and anyone that is an adversary, is a satan.

2 Cor. 11:3-5 proves the serpent is not a fallen angel. Anyone that says they are from God who does not speak the truth that God had the Apostles speak is just like the serpent that deceived Eve. Rome was a deceiver, therefore the dragon (Rome) is “the ancient serpent”.

2 Cor. 11:3  But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity {of devotion} to Christ.

2 Cor. 11:4  For [you seem readily to endure it] if a man comes and preaches another Yeshua [Christ] than the One we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the [Spirit] you [once] received or a different gospel from the one you [then] received {and} welcomed; you tolerate [all that] well enough!

2 Cor. 11:5  Yet I consider myself as in no way inferior to these [precious] extra-super [false] apostles.

The Bible doesn’t support the teaching that says, “the devil, satan is a fallen angel,” therefore the “dragon” in Revelation is not a fallen angel, the “dragon” is Rome.

Rev. 12:9  And the great dragon [Rome] was cast out, the ancient serpent [the deceiver], called the devil [false accuser], and satan [adversary], which deceives the whole world [oikoumene – the Roman world], he was cast out to the earth [the land], and his angels [messengers] were cast out with him.

The Greek word “oikoumene” for the words “whole world” in Rev 12:9 is referring to the Roman world, it is not referring to the entire planet. Rev 12:9 is saying the dragon (Rome) deceives the Roman world, Rev 12:9 is not saying the dragon (Rome) deceives everyone on the planet.

The Greek word “” (ghay) for the words “the earth” in Rev 12:9 is referring to “land”, it is not referring to the entire planet.

Rev 1:1 makes it very clear that everything in Revelation was to happen quickly, and that everything that is written in Revelation is about things that happened after Christ’s resurrection, therefore nothing in Revelation 12 is about before the creation of man, or about before the birth of Christ.

Rev 1:1 The Revelation of Yeshua Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass [take place in quickness]

The Greek word “tachei” for the word “shortly” in Rev 1:1 means “quickness, speed, hastily, immediately”

Rev 4:1 After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in [the] heaven [the sky]! And the first voice which I had heard addressing me like [the calling of] a war trumpet said, Come up here, and I will show you what must take place in the future [take place after these things].

“After these things” in Rev 4:1 is referring to after what Rev 1-3 says.

The Greek word “ouranou” for “heaven” in Rev 4:1 is singular, that means that the word “heaven” in Rev 4:1 is not talking about the place where God dwells, instead it is talking about the “sky”, if the Greek word were plural then that would be talking about the place where God dwells.

Many people that claim to be Christian say Rev 4:1 is talking about the rapture of the church, but the Greek word for “heaven” meaning “sky” in Rev 4:1 proves that teaching is false.

Everything that happens after Rev 4 in Revelation is a prophetic word for the seven churches about their future, not our future.

So, now that we know that the dragon in Rev 20 is Rome, now we can read what happens to the dragon (Rome) in Rev 20.

Rev 20:1 And I saw an angel [messenger] come down from [the] heaven [the sky], having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

The Greek word “ouranou” for “heaven” in Rev 20:1 is singular, that means that the word “heaven” in Rev 20:1 is not talking about the place where God dwells, instead it is talking about the “sky”, if the Greek word were plural then that would be talking about the place where God dwells.

Rev 20:2 And he laid hold on the dragon [Rome], the ancient serpent [the deceiver], which is the devil [false accuser], and satan [adversary], and bound him a thousand years,

The word “thousand” is also used in the Old Testament, and it’s not used to mean a literal thousand, it’s used to show totality.

Psalm 50:10 For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.

The point being communicated in Psalm 50:10 is “totality”, not mathematics.

“Does God not own all the cattle? Does God not own all of the hills,  including the thousand and first hill as well? Psalm 50:10 has nothing to do with “cattle”, nothing to do with a mathematical “thousand”, and nothing to do with “hills”. So, likewise, neither does “a thousand years” have anything to do with the numeric value of a “thousand”, and the multiplication of 365 day periods of time.” – From Bibleprophecyfulfilled.com Thousand Year Reign (Pg. 2)

Rev 1:1 says that everything in Revelation was to happen quickly, therefore “a thousand years” can’t be a literal 1000 years, instead “a thousand years” is symbolic for something else.

Rev 20:3 And cast him into the bottomless pit [an abyss of captivity], and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations [the heathen world] no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

The 1000 years in Rev 20:3 = “fulness of time”

The fulness of time ended after the gospel had been preached to the Roman world.  After the gospel was preached to the Roman world, then the end of the age of the law happened.

The Greek word “ethnos” for the word “nations” in Rev 20:3 is referring to the heathen world, the heathen world are non Jews.

Rev 20:3 is saying, the dragon (Rome) will not be able to stop the preaching of the gospel to the heathen world (the Roman world), until the gospel has been preached to the Roman world. After the gospel was preached to the Roman world, Rome was allowed to deceive the Roman world again.

The gospel had been preached to the Roman world by the time that the book of Colossians was written (Col 1:23)

It is said that the book of Colossians was written in 57 AD or 62 AD. Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 AD.

Col 1:23 Be not moved away from the hope of the gospel which was preached to every creature under [the] heaven [the sky], of which I Paul am made a minister.

After the gospel was preached to the Roman world, Rome was allowed to continue deceiving the nations [the heathen world, non-Jews] (Rev 20:7).

Rev 20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Yeshua, and for the word of God [the preaching of the gospel], and which had not worshiped the beast [the beast is the Roman Empire empowered by Rome], neither its image, neither had received its mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

“a thousand years” in Rev 20:4 means a time of complete reigning with Christ.

Please notice in Rev 20:4 it says that the souls of them who were beheaded reigned with Christ a thousand years, it does not say, “Christ reigned a thousand years.”

Those who were beheaded were killed by the Roman Empire

Rev 20:5 But the rest of the dead [those who were not born from above, who died] lived not again until the thousand years [the fulness of time] were finished. This is the first resurrection.

The fulness of time was fulfilled after the gospel had been preached to the Roman world. After the gospel was preached, God had the Romans destroy Jerusalem, and then after God had the Romans destroy Jerusalem, God destroyed the ungodly people by fire.

Rev 20:6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years [a complete reign with Christ].

Rev 20:6 proves the truth Christ is not God.

Rev 20:7 And when the thousand years are expired [the fulness of time is expired], satan [the adversary (Rome)] shall be loosed out of his prison,

Rev 20:8 And shall go out to deceive the nations [the heathen world (the Roman world)] which are in the four quarters of the earth [the land], Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.

The Greek word “ethnos” for the word “nations” in Rev 20:8 is referring to the heathen world, the heathen world are non Jews.

The Greek word “” (ghay) for the words “the earth” in Rev 20:8-9 is referring to “land”, it is not referring to the entire planet.

Rev 20:9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth [the land], and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of [the] heaven [the sky], and devoured them.

The Greek word “ouranou” for “heaven” in Rev 20:9 is singular, that means that the word “heaven” in Rev 20:9 is not talking about the place where God dwells, instead it is talking about the “sky”, if the Greek word were plural then that would be talking about the place where God dwells.

Rev 20:9-10 talks about the ungodly people that God will destroy by fire, that 2 Pet 3:7 talks about, that event is called “the day of the Lord”, the day of the Lord happened immediately after Jerusalem was destroyed, Jerusalem was destroyed in AD 70, which means that the day of the Lord has already happened.

Rev 20:10 And the devil [false accuser (Rome)] that deceived them [the heathen world] was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast [the Roman Empire that was given it’s authority from the leaders of Rome] and the false prophet [the second beast of Rev 13] are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

Rev 20:11 And I saw a great white throne, and Him [God] that sat on it, from whose face the earth [the land] and [the] heaven [the sky] fled away; and there was found no place for them.

It’s important to understand that God is a Spirit (Jn 4:24), therefore everything that John is seeing is in the Spirit, the throne is not a literal throne, Revelation is a description of what John sees in the Spirit, God is invisible, God is not sitting on a literal throne that can be seen.

The Greek word “” (ghay) for the words “the earth” in Rev 20:11 is referring to “land”, it is not referring to the entire planet.

The Greek word “ouranos” for “heaven” in Rev 20:11 is singular, that means that the word “heaven” in Rev 20:11 is not talking about the place where God dwells, instead it is talking about the “sky”, if the Greek word were plural then that would be talking about the place where God dwells.

Rev 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

Rev 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell [hades (the invisible realm in which all the dead reside)] delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

Rev 20:14 And death and hell [hades (the invisible realm in which all the dead reside ] were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

Rev 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Rev 20:15 talks about the ungodly people that God will destroy by fire that 2 Pet 3:7 talks about, that event is called “the day of the Lord”, the day of the Lord happened immediately after Jerusalem was destroyed, Jerusalem was destroyed in AD 70, which means that the day of the Lord has already happened.

2 Pet 3:7 isn’t about the planet being destroyed by fire, it’s about people being destroyed by fire, after the Romans destroyed Jerusalem, God destroyed the ungodly people by fire. In 2 Peter 3:6, the Greek word for “world” is “kosmos”, “kosmos” means ” the world, universe; worldly affairs; the inhabitants of the world; adornment.”

Since Noah wasn’t killed in the flood, God didn’t destroy the planet, 2 Peter 3:6 isn’t saying God destroyed the planet in the flood, 2 Peter 3:6 is saying God destroyed the people in the flood, likewise 2 Peter 3:7 isn’t talking about the planet being destroyed by fire, 2 Peter 3:7 is talking about people being destroyed by fire, the “ungodly people” that are spoken of in 2 Peter 3:7 were destroyed by fire immediately after Jerusalem was destroyed Jerusalem was destroyed in AD 70, “the day of the Lord” happened immediately after Jerusalem was destroyed (Matt 24:29-30).

2 Peter 3:6 is talking about the flood

2 Pet 3:6  Through which the world [kosmos – the inhabitants of the world] that then [existed] was deluged with water and perished.

The words “heavens and earth” in 2 Peter 3:7 are referring to the world system, they are not referring to the planet. The ungodly people were the world system that God destroyed by fire, that world system was destroyed immediately after Jerusalem was destroyed in AD 70.

2 Pet 3:7  But by the same word the present heavens and earth have been stored up (reserved) for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly people.

Revelation is about things that happened before Jerusalem was destroyed, Revelation is about the destruction of Jerusalem, Revelation is about the day of the Lord, the day of the Lord happened after Jerusalem was destroyed, and Revelation talks about the “new heavens and new earth (new Jerusalem)” that 2 Peter 3:13 talks about.

2 Pet 3:13 But according to his promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth [new Jerusalem], in which righteousness dwells.

The word “we” in 2 Peter 3:13 is referring to the people that the author of 2 Pet was writing to at the time that 2 Pet was written, the word “we” is not referring to this time period.

The “new heavens and a new earth (new Jerusalem)” that is spoken of in 2 Pet 3:13 doesn’t mean that there won’t be people still living in sin on earth, Revelation 21 & 22 never say everyone obeys God after the new heavens and new earth are created, Rev 21 & 22 make it very clear that the “new heavens and a new earth” that is spoken of 2 Peter 3:13 is not a new planet where everyone obeys God.

Rev 21:27  and nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it [new Jerusalem (the new heavens and new earth)], but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Rev 22:14  Blessed (happy and to be envied) are those who cleanse their garments, that they may have the authority {and} right to [approach] the tree of life and to enter through the gates into the city [new Jerusalem (the new heavens and new earth)].

Rev 22:15  [But] outside new Jerusalem [the new heavens and new earth] are the dogs and those who practice sorceries (magic arts) the sexually immoral [anyone who has sex outside of marriage] and the murderers [those who commit unjustified, intentional homicide] and idolaters [those who worship an image] and everyone who loves and deals in falsehood (untruth, false religion, the false church).

Everything that is spoken about in Rev 21 & 22 is happening now, “new Jerusalem (the new heavens and new earth)” is spiritual, all who believe Yeshua is the Messiah that don’t practice sin, enter new Jerusalem, and all who practice sin do not enter new Jerusalem.

1 Jn 5:1  Whoever believes that Yeshua is the Messiah is born of God [born of the Spirit].

1 Jn 3:9  No one born of God practices sin, because His seed [the Holy Spirit] abides in him or her; and he or she cannot sin, because he or she is born of God [born of the Spirit].

1 Jn 5:18  We know [absolutely] that anyone born of God [born of the Spirit] does not [deliberately and knowingly] practice committing sin, but the One Who was begotten of God carefully watches over {and} protects him [Christ’s divine presence (the Holy Spirit) within him who is born of the Spirit preserves him against the evil], and the wicked one [the natural man] does not lay hold (get a grip) on him {or} touch [him].

Revelation is not about our time period, everything in Revelation has already happened, everything in the New Testament has already happened.
