John 3:5 Isn’t Talking About Water Baptism

In Jn 3:5 Christ isn’t talking about 2 births, he is talking about 1 birth, he is talking about being born from above. In Jn 3:5 “water” refers to being born of the Spirit, therefore water and Spirit are the same thing, Jn 3:6-8 confirms that truth.

Nicodemus was the teacher of Israel (Jn 3:10), therefore he should have known that Christ was referring to Ezek 36:25-27 when Christ said “water and Spirit” when referring to being born from above, in John 3:5-8.

John 3:5-8 Yeshua answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God”

3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

3:7 Do not be amazed that I said to you, `You must be born from above’.

3:8 The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.

Ezek 36:25 Then will I [God] sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.

36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

36:27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and you shall keep my judgments, and do them.

It is often said that “water” in John 3:5 is referring to water baptism, but that teaching can’t be true because John 3:6-8 makes it very clear that “water” and “Spirit” (John 3:5), are referring to being born of the Spirit.

No one has to be water baptized to be born of the Spirit.

To be born of the Spirit, one must first believe that God’s Son, Yeshua is the Messiah, and then, God willing, God will baptize the person in the Holy Spirit.

The baptism in the Holy Spirit is was makes a person born of the Spirit, without being baptized in the Holy Spirit, no one can stop practicing sin, the baptism in the Holy Spirit is the repentance that leads to life (Acts 11:16-18).

Acts 11:16-18 And I [Peter] remembered the word of the Lord, how he used to say, `John baptized with water, but you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit

11:17 Therefore if God gave to them [the Gentiles] the same gift as {He gave} to us also after believing in the Lord Yeshua the Messiah (Christ), who was I that I could stand in God’s way?

11:18 When they heard this, they quieted down and glorified God, saying, “Well then, God has granted to the Gentiles also the repentance {that leads} to life.

Only those who believe Yeshua is the Messiah that no longer practice sin are baptized in the Holy Spirit. The baptism in the Holy Spirit is what makes a person born of God.

1 John 5:1 Whosoever believes Yeshua is the Messiah is born of God [born of the Spirit].

1 John 3:9 No one who is born of God [born of the Spirit] practices sin, because His seed [the Holy Spirit] abides in him or her; and he or she cannot sin, because he or she is born of God [born of the Spirit].
